The Health Architecture Laboratory

The Health Architecture Laboratory (HeAL) is an applied Computer Science research group within the UKZN/CSIR Meraka Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research (CAIR) located at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Westville campus in Durban. The lab was established and is currently supported by grants from the Rockefeller Foundation and Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC).

Its goal is to provides a research and development space to apply and advance the state of the art in Computer Science to transform health care in Africa. HeAL works with several local and international organizations to provide support for practical research projects to develop architectural artifacts and software building blocks at various levels in the healthcare system. The lab’s research is influencing the architecture of countrywide computer systems in a number of developing countries, including South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Rwanda.
