Ethics of Artificial Intelligence

The research focus of the node is on ethics of AI and aspects of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning as it interfaces with research themes in philosophy of science. Specifically, in terms of ethics of AI, the research foci are ethics of social robotics, ethics of automated weapon systems, ethics of AI and sustainability, and fair, accountable and transparent machine learning. In terms of KRR and philosophy of science, the focus is on applications of mathematical model theory and preferential logics in debates on scientific realism and the structure of scientific theories in philosophy of science, as well as analysis of epistemic obstacles to knowledge representation and reasoning. this node organises two symposium series - the CAIR/UP AI and Society Symposium Series, and the South African Logic and Philosophy of Science Symposium Series.
